Great, it works :). No problems at all. Love it :).

Only feature I’m missing, but I also miss that in Zenphoto and Plogger, is that you can’t edit the template within the admin area. Have you planned this feature in future?

    Thanks a lot!

Hi - Just a small thing I have noticed. When you create a gallery and then rename it in the Organize interface, it changes the name of the gallery, but the gallery name in the breadcrumb trail is still the old gallery name. Thanks for the great gallery !

Great work Noel! I am testing this under a Win XP (WAMP) setup. I got a few glitches:

    - After uploading a few individual images, when going into organize, I get these warnings repeated several times for lines 314, 318, 322, (15 total):

Warning: fopen(http://localhost/photostackb/thumb.php?gallery=.%2FFranceâ„‘=Aigueze%25201689.jpg&width=500&height=500): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 401 Authorization Required in c:\easyphp\www\photostackb\includes\admin.class.php on line 314

    - Trying to upload a zip with about 20 files, I got a message saying the archive is too big

    - Trying to upload a zip with 5 filesm I get a message sagin ” An error occurred: Could not decompress archive”

    Individual files are uploaded ok.

You might want to clarify the admin login URL, since I don’t see it in /demo/ (or am I blind?)

I was planning on waiting to play with the templates until after a full release. This is working so well for me that I have started a little tinkering! Kick-ass Noel, no other words for it!

Just an idea, how easy would it be to add a button on an Image Admin page to set that image as the Album thumb? Seems like it would be nice in a large album to just browse to the image you want and set that as the Intro image rather than remembering the filename and then scrolling through the dropdown for it. Just an idea. The latest version worked straight away for me. thanks so much for your work on this, it is much much appreciated…!!

Hi, sorry that I post this here. But when I create a new album I get a big error. Set al l of the permissions to 777, so probbly that’s not the problem.

Warning: fopen(): SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 565 is not allowed to access /home/virtual/site61/fst/var/www/html/photostack/galleries/New York owned by uid 48 in /home/virtual/site61/fst/var/www/html/photostack/includes/io_csv.class.php on line 79

Warning: fopen(galleries/./New York/metadata.csv): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/virtual/site61/fst/var/www/html/photostack/includes/io_csv.class.php on line 79

And a smooth looking error that says:
An error occurred: Could not save gallery info

    Hopefully you can help.

Still having browser difficulities on a Mac:

    Browsers:
    - Safari 1.0.3
    - Mac IE 5.2.2
    Problems:
    1) “new sub-gallery” does not work (enter name and click “ok” — nothing happens)
    2) nothing is editable in the “edit gallery” window (for sub-galleries created using a different browser), — text fields disappear or do nothing when clicked and the window will not close when “done editing” is clicked

    Browser:
    - Opera 7.54
    Problem:
    1) the “edit gallery” window appears to work at first — click on the field you want to enter text for — type in the text, click ‘ok’ — the text field disappears and says ‘Saving…’ but the new or edited text never saves.

    Browser:
    - Netscape 7.1
    No Problems:
    1) The one browser I’ve found that works for editing/adding/deleting galleries and text.

However —> regardless of browser, text in gallery descriptions leave’s slashes before apostrophes — I know there is a ’stripslashes’ feature in php –> just not sure how to implement it.

I’ve also received the following errors on my server’s error_log (but it doesn’t seem to hinder performance):
[10-Oct-2005 08:55:18] PHP Warning: Division by zero in /home/photonom/public_html/chicnhair/galleries/includes/photostack.class.php on line 1022
[10-Oct-2005 08:55:18] PHP Warning: Division by zero in /home/photonom/public_html/chicnhair/galleries/includes/photostack.class.php on line 1058

And… the mod_rewrite/htaccess was working for my URLs, then I moved my photostack folder to a different directory and re-named it (I was sure to edit my config file with the correct path). The album page works and the gallery pages work, but individual image pages do not work (404 error) — though the urls look correct. I deleted my galleries and re-created new ones… turned htacess off, then on again and still get a 404 for image pages. So, for now, I’ve turned mod rewrite off and it works fine with messy urls.

thanks again for working so hard on Photostack!

Am I the only one who gets a virtually empty page at http://photostack.org/demo?

Viewing image 0-1 of 0; no menus; no joy.

Great work, Noel. I almost have everything working except I am getting the same error that Jorn received. I have shell access to my server so I checked to see who owned the folder and saw that the owner was apache. I tried to delete the folder and of course was denied. My remedy was to first change the permissions of the file to 777 through a php script and then I could delete it manually. Next I recreated the folder manually, not using the admin script, and changed the permissions to 777. I was then able to upload pictures using the admin pages. All of the pictures that I have uploaded belong to apache but I am able to modify all of the information as well as delete them through the admin section. I am confused as to why I cannot do this with folders but I can with the images. I don’t know if it is possible to change this behavior or to at least check if safe_mode is on and if so change how the script creates the gallery folders. Thanks again for a great piece of software and I hope this can be worked out.
    Using the SVN version 369

For beta 368, in order to get the RSS feed working with mod_rewrite clean urls, I had to add the following line to .htaccess before the “rewrite galleries” rule:

    # rewrite rss
    RewriteRule ^((.*)/)?(rss/)$ index.php?gallery=$2&template=rss [ne]

Not sure if this is the best rule to accomplish this, but it seems to get the job done. See for example: shervinfoto.com/gallery/

Nice work, Noel. I’ve been waiting for this release for quite a while! Glad to see if finally coming together.

Just as Brant Winter noticed, when you edit a gallery name, it doesn’t actually stick. When you are done editing, the name is the same as it was before.

Also, when I edited the templates/default files, the changes didn’t show up on the site. ??

    Otherwise, it looks pretty nice!

[…] I have been using photostack for my photos section and it has served me well up to a certain point. There have been a couple of things that have annoyed me about it but they were small enough that I let it go since the rest of it worked really well. The version that I have been using is 2.17b which was released just about a year ago. Noel has finally released the next beta of photostack and I have been playing with it on another site. There are many great improvments but one that really stands out for me is on the user end. If a gallery has a large number of photos and therefore many pages of photos, when a user is pageing through the thumbnails and wants to see the larger view, they click on the thumbnail. Once they have viewed the photo if they would like to go back to the previous page of thumbnails they can now. In version 2.18b or less, if you click the “up a level” link to go back to the thumbnail view you will be taken back to the first page of thumbnails. That is most annoying. I am really enjoying the new look and layout of the admin section. It uses AJAX for a lot of the editing and is really pretty slick. I do have one issue with the gallery creation section. The gallery folders are created using the script of course but as a result the owner of the gallery folders is apache. That is probably not an issue for anyone using apache without SAFE_MODE turned on, but my host uses SAFE_MODE. Because the gallery folders are owned by apache you cannot write to them i.e. upload photos. I don’t know if there is any way to fix this but I have my fingers crossed. I have been looking into a couple of other products and one that I have found that is really enticing is Zenphoto. There is a bonus on this one in that it is also set up as a blog. While I like this feature I don’t know if this would draw more comment spam. A couple of others that are interesting are Simple PHP Gallery and Plogger. Whatever software I end up using it will take a little work because I will have to set up some kind of redirect in my main .htaccess file to redirect all of the links to photo-posts that are currently out there. […]

Overall i like photostak very much. However I’m having a few problems with the latest beta:

    * unable to make new gallery
    * sometimes “up” or “next” navigation in the gallery is broken. the url is pointing to /,12 which doesn’t look right to me.

not sure why it’s doing this. maybe a bad config on my part.

Let’s start at the beginning and I’ll try and answer everybody’s question…

    romamor
    - You are getting a HTTP 401 error unrelated to the program, but with your apache setup/permissions on your web directories.

    - You need to set your upload_max_size in php.ini to eliminate the upload limit.

    - Your path to ZIP is probably incorrect

    chris rhee
    - The admin URL is http://photostack.org/demo/organize.php

    Noah
    - Thanks for the idea - I did already think of it and may implement it in the future.

    Jorn
    - I’m really sorry about your safe mode problems, but I’m not sure I can even get it to work with safe mode, most gallery scripts don’t.

    Stacey
    - True, all browsers don’t work with the admin interface - but I’m stiking with the “37 Signals method” and ignoring the old browsers.

    Park
    - The gallery is emptied every 5 minutes

    Joel
    - Confused, but I’ll check it out. Thanks

    Joe
    - I’m afraid that photostack will not work with safe mode on. sorry.

    Another Will
    - Thanks.

    Lance
    - it does change, it just doesn’t rename the album’s actual folder, only the Metadata
